Single parents face unique health challenges. In this section, you’ll find information on promoting your child’s health, support services in case of illness, ways to reduce your workload, and health promotion. 

Advice and support for your child's health and development

Local pediatric practices and a network of specialized facilities offer advice and early intervention services to address the wide range of health-related questions and issues concerning your child.

Children's, youth and dental service of the public health department

The Public Health Department offers a wide range of assistance, counseling, and information regarding developmental delays, disabilities, speech impairments, vaccinations, dental health, and early intervention services.

At early intervention and counseling centers, you can receive specialized counseling and support for your child following a pediatric examination.

Supporting the integration of a child with a disability

The Inclusion Office provides counseling to children and adolescents with disabilities and offers support for early intervention as well as for their integration into daycare centers and schools.

Health insurance

As a general rule, children are covered under their parents’ or one parent’s family health insurance. This also applies in the event of separation until the divorce becomes final. For single parents, whether a child is covered under a public or private health insurance plan depends on income and other conditions.

If you have a disability or are at risk of developing one, you may be eligible for benefits under SGB IX and/or long-term care insurance.

Child sickness benefit in the event of a child's illness

As parents with public health insurance, you can apply for child sickness benefits for 15 working days for children up to age 12 or for children with a disability. If you are a single parent, you are entitled to 30 days; if you have multiple children, you are entitled to 35 or 70 days, respectively. Your employer must then grant you leave from work for this period. For those with private health insurance, the self-employed, and civil servants, there are similar regulations regarding compensation for loss of earnings.

Inpatient hospitalization of your child

If your child needs to be admitted to the hospital, you may have many questions, such as: Can I stay with them as a caregiver? Am I eligible for home care assistance, and how can I arrange care for their siblings? The AKIK e.V. association offers helpful support and advice on these matters.

Household help and childcare when parents are ill

If you, as a parent or single parent, become ill or need to be hospitalized, health insurance companies will cover the cost of a home care aide under certain conditions (for children under 12).
These aides are provided by various local care agencies. You can ask your health insurance provider for current addresses of local services. However, you can also ask people familiar to your children, such as friends or acquaintances, for help and bill their services to your health insurance provider.
