faceless - women in prostitution
From September 11 to October 26, the exhibition "Faceless - Women in Prostitution" will be available at the Kunsthaus Wiesbaden with an accompanying program.
The exhibition "faceless - women in prostitution" is dedicated to a social taboo topic: women in prostitution. They are confronted with hiding their true identity on a daily basis. In society, they hide their faces, dreaming "facelessly" of a different life.
The exhibition is based on the experiences of women who work in prostitution. These are often women who have left their home countries to escape the lack of prospects there and start a new life under better conditions in Germany. But the reality is different.
Photographer Hyp Yerlikaya accompanied the women with his camera for over two years together with the Amalie advice center. In his pictures, he captures people, situations and places with the means of staging. A total of 40 pictures and accompanying texts tell the story of these women - their fears and worries, but also their dreams and hopes.
The Kunsthaus is also showing the photo series "Freier" by photographer Bettina Flitner.
Although the Prostitutes Protection Act came into force in 2017, the majority of women lead a life outside of social perception. Only a few of them manage to get out. The aim of this project is to raise social awareness and stimulate public discourse about the often precarious living and working conditions of prostitutes in Germany.
The Amalie advice center of the Diakonisches Werk Mannheim has been offering women in prostitution help, advice and support in stressful life situations since 2013.
The entire supporting program was designed and financed by the municipal women's department of the state capital Wiesbaden. Unless otherwise stated, the Department of the Municipal Women's Representative is the organizer.

Lecture: Crime Scene Germany - September 17 at 7 pm in the Theater im Pariser Hof
Germany is considered the "brothel of Europe" and is one of the main target countries for international human trafficking. In his lecture, the speaker will explain how closely prostitution is linked to organized crime.
Manfred Paulus was head of the criminal investigation department in Ulm for over three decades and was responsible for trafficking in women and prostitution. He carries out prevention measures in Eastern Europe and has published numerous books on the subject of human trafficking.

Film: Misdirection - September 18 at 5:30 p.m. in the Murnau Filmtheater
The 16-minute documentary is about the concept of "work" in the prostitution system. It features four women who have managed to leave the sexist and racist system of prostitution behind them:
Dana, Maya, Ilona and Sophie name what is so often rhetorically obscured in mainstream discourse - namely the physical and psychological violence in prostitution and the consequential damage to health that results.
Listening to the women's reports about the lawless space of prostitution, one inevitably has to ask oneself how anyone could even come up with the idea of considering this sometimes very abysmal terrain as a "job option" and as a "service sector".
The screening will be followed by a discussion with the Austrian director Susanne Riegler.

Moderated discussion: Insights into the milieu: An insider reports - September 24 at 7 p.m. in the Theater im Pariser Hof
The evening's speaker will provide insights into how the prostitution market works: Who earns money from prostitution - and how does the business with the so-called "apartments for hire" work? And how do criminal groups divide up the market among themselves?
Philip Schlaffer is a former neo-Nazi, criminal rocker and violent offender. Among other things, he used to run apartment rentals in northern Germany. Today, as a dropout, he works with his association Extremislos e.V. to raise awareness and prevent extremism.

Lecture: Legal and ethical aspects of prostitution - October 1 at 6 pm at Heimathafen
How should the German approach of a legalized and regulated prostitution market be assessed in relation to international and European law? To what extent is this a matter of sexual self-determination and the legislative assumption of voluntariness? Is the local prostitution policy compatible with our constitution and the human dignity standard of Article 1 of the Basic Law? One of the main findings was a causal link between a critical social awareness of prostitution and a reduction in the number of human trafficking victims in these countries. In addition, there was an effective fight against the structures of cross-border organized crime.
Prof. Dr. Ulrich Rommelfanger will discuss these issues in his lecture. He is a lawyer specializing in constitutional, administrative and medical law. Among other things, he was a judge in the social and administrative courts, founding rector and lecturer at the Saxony Police University and a member of the Thuringian Constitutional Court in Weimar from 1996 to 2002.
The second speaker of the evening, Dr. Jakob Drobnik , a lawyer from the University of Poznan (Poland) with a doctorate in theology, will present the results of his extensive analysis of human trafficking in Sweden, Norway and France, which was published in May: The main findings include a causal link between critical social awareness-raising on prostitution, a reduction in human trafficking victims in these countries and an effective fight against the structures of cross-border organized crime.

She will analyze the role of demand in the prostitution system and its effects on equality and social coexistence.

What needs do women, especially homeless women, have with regard to urban planning? How are violence, homelessness and prostitution connected?
Charlotte vom Kolke studied spatial planning and is a board member of the Netzwerk Frauenrecht e.V. and host of the Grenzgängerin podcast. In her talk, she reports on the findings of her academic work on female homelessness.
Rent for sex? As in many other cities, the housing market in Wiesbaden is highly competitive. Landlords who offer housing in exchange for sexual favors are a well-known phenomenon. What do we know about this issue? And what could be possible counter-strategies?
Elly Arrow is a feminist activist and international speaker on issues such as prostitution, pornography and sexual violence. She is co-host of the Red Light Exposé podcast.

Film and discussion: Schmuck der Strasse - October 16 at 5:30 p.m. in the Murnau Filmtheater
The jewelry of the street, that's Eva, Kelly, Chiqui and many other trans women from Latin America who live in Schmuckstraße in St. Pauli. They came to Hamburg because they cannot live and work as freely in their home country as they can here. The house in Schmuckstraße and Donatella's bar are the first port of call for transsexual men in the Hanseatic city.
Behind the inconspicuous Gründerzeit façade, just a few meters away from the glittering world of the Reeperbahn and the neon lights of the Große Freiheit, they have found a home for their very special women's microcosm.
Afterwards, Toti Baches (director) will be available for a discussion with the audience.

Panel discussion: Care and Feminism - October 22 at 7 p.m. in the Kunsthaus
Who bears responsibility in the system of sexual exploitation?
The Jewish Women's Association addressed this question over 100 years ago - with a clear feminist stance and without moral condemnation of the women involved. At the center of their criticism: the clients, the patriarchal system and the fight against trafficking in girls.
The panel discussion sheds light on this little-known story between welfare, the fight against anti-Semitism and emancipatory social work - and asks: What can we learn from it today?
