Read more with book boxes
In many districts, artists have worked with children to design and install book boxes. So that books are easier to find.
Children have been designing these colorful, cheerful bookcases and book boxes together with artists as part of the city’s “Schöne Ferien” summer program for several years now. There are now 11 of them scattered throughout the city.
The concept is simple: you place books in a cabinet and take others in exchange. Of course, you can also just borrow or just swap. Use is free of charge.
Local sponsors take care of the boxes. Sometimes they are private individuals, sometimes groups of children from nearby institutions. The Youth Work Department of the Office of Social Services coordinates the maintenance and regular restocking of children’s books.
The bookcases also offer many opportunities to provide children with targeted activities related to literature and language or languages.
