Digital passport photo (ID photo) from August 1, 2025
From August 1, 2025, only digital passport photos (ID photos) will be accepted.
Printed paper photos are no longer permitted.
There are the following options for creating a digital passport photo.

Photo studio or specialist shop You can visit a certified photo studio or specialist store that is authorized to take digital passport photos. Please contact your chosen photo studio or specialist store to find out whether it is certified to take digital passport photos. You will receive a printout with a QR code, which you must bring with you to your appointment with us. |

Immigration office There are photo booths in the waiting room at the Foreigners' Registration Office. You must take the photos before your appointment. If you want to use this option, please come to the authority early and allow for the extra time. The fee for a digital passport photo is 6 euros. You do not pay the fee at the machine, but during your appointment. You will not receive a paper printout of the photo. |
| We recommend that children under the age of 6 have their photos taken in a photo studio or specialist store. |
Background: From May 1, 2025, new legal regulations for passport photos will come into force in Germany.
The switch to digital passport photos is intended to increase security and prevent manipulation, such as that made possible by so-called morphing techniques.
Ukraine
All residence permits for refugees from Ukraine that are valid on February 1, 2026 will be automatically extended until March 4, 2027.
Refugees do not need to visit the Foreigners' Registration Office to extend their residence permits. It is not necessary to submit an application or make contact.

National passports of the Russian Federation, change from January 01, 2026
The Russian Federation currently issues both biometric and non-biometric passports. From 01 January 2026, only biometric passports will be recognized in Germany.
Exception: Your residence permit was issued in conjunction with a non-biometric passport. In this case, your non-biometric passport will be recognized until this residence permit expires.
