Air quality in Wiesbaden

The air situation in the state capital of Wiesbaden is characterized by its geographical location.

Wiesbaden's city center is located in a "basin", framed by the Taunus ridge in the north, the Mosbacher Berg in the south and the Bierstadt Höhe in the east. Whereas a pleasant, gentle climate used to prevail, today a typical urban climate prevails due to the artificial influences.

This means

  • Times with low air exchange, i.e. "stagnant air"
  • increased accumulation of pollutants
  • high humidity and
  • high temperatures in summer

The valleys leading down from the Taunus slope play an important role in supplying the city with fresh air. The cold air flowing down from the wooded slopes at night is directed into the city center through the Wellritz, Kesselbach, Nero and Tennelbach valleys and contributes to improving the air and the local climate. The city is "ventilated" through the Salzbachtal towards Biebrich/Rhine.

The air in Wiesbaden - especially in the city center and in some outlying districts - is mainly polluted with nitrogen dioxide and to a lesser extent with particulate matter. These pollutants are primarily released into the air from road traffic. This is also due to the fact that the number of registered motor vehicles has risen continuously in recent decades and remains at a high level today.

In contrast, pollution from sulphur dioxide and particulate matter, which used to occur frequently during the heating period, now plays a subordinate role. However, the increased use of wood-burning stoves can be problematic. Depending on the topographical location and the improper or even inappropriate operation of these stoves, problems can arise in individual cases. In particular, odor nuisance and smoke formation, which is also associated with increased concentrations of particulate matter, play a role here. Industry, on the other hand, only contributes to a relatively small proportion of air pollution.
