Lecture: The soil archive - The world beneath our feet from an archaeological perspective

On Wednesday, February 25, at 6 p.m., the environmental advisory service invites you to a lecture entitled "The soil archive - the world beneath our feet from an archaeological perspective" at the Umweltladen. When we think of archives, we often think of dusty files and old books. But soils are also archives - full of exciting traces of times gone by.

Soils preserve evidence of natural and cultural history, often right beneath our feet. Natural events, climate change, and human activity have left recognizable traces in our soils throughout the ages.

Dr. Sandra Sosnowski, district archaeologist at hessenARCHÄOLOGIE, takes you on a journey of discovery underground in her one-hour lecture. Using vivid examples and current research, she provides insights into the soil archive and the work of hessenARCHÄOLOGIE. What effects do climate change, modern land use, and development have on the soil archive? What methods are used to investigate and preserve archaeological sites, and what exactly happens during an archaeological excavation? Those who are particularly interested will also receive tips on how they can actively participate in the research and preservation of archaeological sites.

The lecture is part of the current exhibition "Lebensraum Stadt – jeder Quadratmeter zählt" (The city as a habitat – every square meter counts), which can be seen at the Umweltladen until March 20.
