Observation tower at Kostheim Mainhafen
The observation tower at Kostheim Mainhafen is a striking feature of the RhineMain Regional Park. The 20-metre-high steel structure has stood at the port since 2011 and combines the themes of nature, industrial culture and inland shipping.
The outlook
The view from the tower conveys a variety of impressions and shows the coexistence of industry, housing and nature:
- To the Main and Rhine: The tower shows the Main shortly before it flows into the Rhine.
- To the lock and bridge: See the Kostheim lock and the bridge to Ginsheim-Gustavsburg.
- To cities and nature: Enjoy the view of Mainz, Wiesbaden and the Taunus.
The observation tower combines the industrial history of Kostheim with the beauty of the river landscape.
Design and support
The state capital of Wiesbaden erected the tower in collaboration with Essity Operations Mainz-Kostheim GmbH (formerly SCA). The tower, designed by architect Florian Urbach, is a discreet three-legged steel structure. The themes of inland shipping and industrial culture are reflected in the design. The project was sponsored by the RhineMain Regional Park with the support of Fraport AG. The Main riverbank path was also paved.
Connecting the regional park routes
The observation tower is located at the intersection of two regional park routes:
- Circular route: The 190-kilometer route leads around Frankfurt.
- Leinpfad: This route runs along the Rhine through Wiesbaden to the Rheingau.
The area around the observation tower is currently being redesigned with additional funding. In future, it will also be an inviting place to stay.
