Schelmengraben district center
After the old Schelmengraben district center could no longer be renovated, the building for a new district center was rebuilt with funding from the "Social Cohesion Schelmengraben" urban development program and officially opened in 2022.
The total cost of the construction project amounted to around 12.4 million euros.
The special significance of the district center (opens in a new tab) as the heart of the Schelmengraben district is emphasized by a striking building shape with an ascending structure that takes the topographical situation into account. The façade consists of folded aluminum in a gold finish. The building was designed as a passive house and is aimed at various user groups. These were actively involved by the district center team as early as the planning phase. sdks architekten dummert sonek partner mbB from Darmstadt was commissioned to design the building.
Once completed, the new building will offer a wide range of indoor and outdoor uses. These include a hall with a stage for private parties, concerts, and larger events, a fully equipped exercise hall with a climbing wall, a workshop, a cultural room, and meeting rooms. The community center focuses on open work with children and young people. It also has a youth café, a boys' room and a girls' room for gender-sensitive work, and a reading room.
In addition, the Schelmengraben e.V. working group and the Schelmengraben district office, which are sponsored by BauHaus Werkstätten Wiesbaden GmbH, are located in the district center and use the building's suitable infrastructure for their administrative purposes.
