Neighborhood square in the Gerichtsstraße
More space for people and greenery: Gerichtsstrasse is now a place for people in the neighborhood. They can spend time in the pedestrian zone and meet people.
Background and planning
Gerichtsstraße connects Oranienstraße and Moritzstraße in the Mitte district. The area has already become more attractive thanks to the establishment of the Fresenius University of Applied Sciences and the renovation of the old court building.
A pedestrian zone has been created here so that the surrounding area can also be used. The street has been transformed into an attractive place for people in the district and the city with a uniform square design. The new pedestrian zone creates meeting places and promotes interaction between people. It revitalizes and enhances the area around the Old Court. The new pedestrian zone significantly revitalizes the quarter and showcases the imposing Old Court. Access will remain exclusively for residents, delivery services, emergency services and waste disposal.
New design elements
Green oasis and play areas
- Tree quarters: Existing trees are supplemented by raised beds with seating. A diseased tree was replaced in Oranienstraße.
- Activity strip: Seating for all age groups along the Alter Gericht and four play areas for children are being created.
- Outdoor catering: In addition to the areas that can be used by everyone, there are also places to stop for refreshments with outdoor catering.
Improved infrastructure
- Traffic safety: Bollards prevent motorized vehicles from entering Moritzstrasse. Emergency vehicles can remove them if necessary. People on foot or by bike can move around safely here.
- Amenities: Bicycle racks, new lighting and garbage bins complete the design. A public drinking fountain provides water in the summer months.
These measures create more space for pedestrians, increase the green areas and improve the quality of life in the neighborhood. Wiesbaden is thus setting an example for sustainable urban development.
Implementation and financing
The city of Wiesbaden redesigned Gerichtsstraße in spring 2024. It used around 1 million euros from the federal-state program "Lebendige Zentren" for this. The planning and implementation were carried out in collaboration with various municipal departments and SEG Stadtentwicklungsgesellschaft mbH.
