Saturday - right into life
Breakfast isn’t served at the hotel today, but at “Wiesbaden’s living room,” Café Maldaner (opens in a new tab), which has been treating its guests to the finest Viennese coffeehouse tradition for over 150 years. Breakfast is brought to your table by waitstaff in uniform and presented in true style on étagères. Here you’ll also find the finest chocolates and macarons to take home to your loved ones. Be sure to make a reservation in advance!
Today is market day in Wiesbaden. At the Dern’schen Gelände, stalls laden with fruit, vegetables, flowers, baked goods, and specialties invite you to browse. Be sure to also take a look inside the Marktkirche, Wiesbaden’s tallest building, which is often referred to as “Nassau’s Cathedral” due to its significance.
Quellgeflüster tip: The Marktkirche's carillon, with its 49 bronze bells, can be played by hand. That's why it's particularly worth listening when the Market Church's cantors Thomas J. Frank or Hans Uwe Hielscher make the carillon ring at market time on Saturdays - from 12:05 to 12:30!
You absolutely must stop by the traditional Kunder Confectionery (opens in a new tab), which makes the famous original pineapple tarts (opens in a new tab) in the finest artisanal tradition—a must-try during any visit to Wiesbaden.
Fancy a break? In Mauergasse, just around the corner from the market, numerous bars and cafés await you for some relaxation and "people-watching"—such as the Italian Bar Sbagliato (opens in a new tab), the wine bars at Laqaui, (opens in a new tab) or Balthasar Ress (opens in a new tab). All offer light bites to eat. An absolute MUST is a visit to the interior design shop drinneN (opens in a new tab)!
Well-fortified, we now head to “Wiesbaden’s quirkiest landmark”—the Nerobergbahn, which has been taking guests up to Wiesbaden’s beloved local mountain since 1888. The roughly 30-minute walk is worth it if only because it leads along the Nerotalanlagen, lined with beautiful villas. The Nerobergbahn is one of only four water-powered funicular railways left in the world—and it’s still preserved in its original condition. It runs from April (usually starting on Good Friday) through early November, Monday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. You’ll be at the top in three and a half minutes!
There’s plenty to see and do on the Neroberg: The Monopteros is THE photo spot in Wiesbaden—especially for weddings. From the Löwenterrasse or the Chateau Néro (opens in a new tab) wine bar, you’ll have what is perhaps the most beautiful view of Wiesbaden.
Quellgeflüster tip: The Neroberg is one of the few inner-city vineyards in Germany and has been cultivated for 500 years with Riesling, which is so typical of the region. You can taste it directly in the vineyard during a guided wine tasting (opens in a new tab)!
In the mood for some culture? You’ll be spoiled for choice here: As a four-genre theater, the Hessian State Theater in Wiesbaden (opens in a new tab) offers a top-notch program—but it’s almost worth a visit just to spend intermission in the theater’s baroque foyer, which is truly one of a kind!
In addition, Wiesbaden boasts a very lively cabaret scene (opens in a new tab). Check out the programs at the Kammerspiele Wiesbaden (opens in a new tab), the Theater im Pariser Hof (opens in a new tab), or kuenstlerhaus43 (opens in a new tab), which also offers an entertaining dinner theater experience. A visit to the Velvets Theater (opens in a new tab), located just outside the city, is a unique experience—a black theater that stages classics like “The Little Prince.” If you’re more in the mood for movies, we highly recommend the Caligari FilmBühne (opens in a new tab), an arthouse cinema that screens selected films in a beautiful Art Deco atmosphere.
Before and/or after, you should definitely stop by Obere Webergasse, where the locals love to hang out. You can get great pizza at Casa delle Olive (opens in a new tab), which you can also order from the Weinod Vinothek & Weinbar (opens in a new tab). The Wine in the Hood (opens in a new tab) wine bar is also lovely, offering delicious cheese and ham platters and, of course, top-notch wines. In the summer, everything happens outdoors on Obere Webergasse!
