With Christoph Stoll at the weekly market
Christoph Stoll's nursery has been run as a family business for generations. It all began in the middle of the 19th century with just a few beds - today the cultivation area in Frankfurt Oberrad covers 33,000 square meters.
Miss Quellgeflüster: What are some of your favorite moments?
Christoph: The atmosphere early in the morning is really special, when everyone is setting up their stalls, with all the clattering and rustling... The smells mingle, and the whole scene of the market comes together bit by bit.
Fräulein Quellgeflüster: When do you start in the morning?
Christoph: We start at five o’clock and it takes us about two hours to get everything ready. For me, that means the alarm goes off at three... Yikes!
Christoph StollWe start at five o'clock and it takes us about two hours to finish. For me, that means the alarm clock rings at three o'clock ... Jaul!
Miss Quellgeflüster: What do you have on offer?
Christoph: Wow—a huge variety! In the summer, almost everything comes from our garden, especially lots of different tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, lettuce, kohlrabi, beans, cauliflower, melons, and herbs. In the winter, I buy some items at the wholesale market to ensure we have an appealing selection then as well.
Miss Quellgeflüster: What do you prioritize?
Christoph: Definitely quality, variety, and authenticity!
Fräulein Quellgeflüster: You offer some rare vegetable varieties...
Christoph: That’s right, like monk’s beard, which looks like chives but is an Italian vegetable. It tastes a bit like spinach. We cook spaghetti, add the monk’s beard four minutes before it’s done, mix it in briefly, and let it cook along with the rest. Then we sauté the whole thing in a pan with garlic, onions, olive oil, and chili peppers. Delicious!
Miss Quellgeflüster: Do you have a favorite dish made with your products?
Christoph: Definitely tomato salad in the summer with the nine delicacies—that is, nine different tomato varieties!
