On the road in the ... Mountain church quarter
The Bergkirchenviertel is a very special neighborhood with small bars, restaurants and individual stores. Thomas Schachler from the wine bar nero22 reveals what he likes about the district and Nerostrasse!
Miss Quellgeflüster: What does Nerostraße mean to you?
Thomas: Nerostraße is a very special place—a unique neighborhood where everyone knows everyone else. Many warm-hearted people live and work here and in the surrounding area; they treat each other with respect, talk to one another, and look out for one another. There are small, owner-operated shops, cafes, restaurants, an organic wine bar, artisanal businesses, art, galleries, retail, agencies, architects, fashion, bike shops, beauty, and wellness... And it’s now even more livable thanks to the creation of Wiesbaden’s first traffic-calmed shopping street. Thank you to the dedicated people in the initiative for a livable Nerostraße!
Miss Quellgeflüster: Who’s coming over to your place?
Thomas: My wife Sabine, with her pottery studio and gallery, Ile22, (opens in a new tab) right next door, and the wine bar nero22—together, they’re special places: her workshop and my living room. Young and older people alike come together here—in other words, everyone—people from all over the world. Nice people. Those who live in the surrounding area or who discovered us at some point and love coming back. A warm and welcoming place where you can feel at home.
Miss Quellgeflüster: What is your connection to the State Theater?
Thomas: As a child, I went to the State Theater regularly, and there have always been artists, musicians, and creative people in my family. Today, I’m above all a fan of the Hessian State Ballet (opens in a new tab). I’m very close to many of the dancers in the company. Every year—twice in June—they transform the sidewalk in front of nero22 into a stage and delight my guests and friends with modern ballet.
Miss Quellgeflüster: What are your tips for the Bergkirchen neighborhood?
Thomas: My personal highlights on Nerostraße are Dale’s Cake, with its beautiful backyard, delicious soups for lunch, and such friendly people. Having coffee at The Friday Cupping Room and at Kaufmanns. And feeling like I’m in southern Italy at De Paola—with Luigi and his super-friendly team.
Miss Quellgeflüster: And where do you like to go out?
Thomas: Karim's Brasserie (opens in a new tab), Butta La Pasta (opens in a new tab), Café Maldaner (opens in a new tab), and Mazzuko Gelateria (opens in a new tab) are places where I feel right at home!
