Dr. Mareike Buchmann - Atelier 4

Mareike Buchmann

Mareike Buchmann has been living and working in Wiesbaden for over 15 years as a freelance performance artist and movement researcher. Her artistic practice spans dance, text, sound, and objects, with improvisation serving as her central artistic method.

Mareike Buchmann’s works unfold fluid, dynamic spaces in which body, material, and environment merge into one another. The result is fragmentary, associative spaces of perception, characterized by atmospheres, transitions, and shifts. Dreams, traces, and memories are recurring motifs in her work.

In addition to her solo work, Mareike leads the IDA FLUX Ensemble. She is part of the independent arts scene in the Rhine-Main region and is active there in cultural policy. Her work is supported by numerous grants and funding.

Teaching and outreach are an essential part of her practice. Under the name SYMSOMA, she shares her knowledge of movement, the body, and independent dance in workshops and seminars and teaches at various universities, bridging the gap between practice and theory.

Mareike Buchmann earned her doctorate at the University of Salzburg at the intersection of art and science, focusing on the theme of Body/Traces/Sensations.
