Favorite places in Wiesbaden: Dr. Susanne Claußen - Luther Church
Tour guide Dr. Susanne Claußen loves the magnificent Luther Church in Wiesbaden - a place of tranquillity in the shade of mighty avenue trees. The square in front of the church is also harmonious.
My favorite place in Wiesbaden is one that I don't spend much time in, but one that I cycle past every day after work. It's the square in front of the Lutheran church at the beginning of Mosbacher Straße.
Everything is just right here: while it was hot and dusty in the city center, up here I am greeted by the shade of mighty avenue trees and the noise of the city fades away in the adjacent residential area.
And then, of course, there is the Luther Church itself, an Art Nouveau ensemble built by Friedrich Pützer and completed in 1910. Pützer also planned parish rooms and parsonages for the church. This was a completely new functionality in church building at the time. A huge roof spans many parts of the ensemble, which blends harmoniously into the surrounding buildings. The huge roof is also a technical masterpiece. The consistent design of the Lutherkirche is striking. Friedrich Pützer wanted to free himself from the burden of the past and therefore sought new forms. As a result, the exterior and interior of the Lutherkirche became a magnificent Art Nouveau church. The mosaic-decorated portal, which I can see from Mosbacher Straße, also contributes to the exterior beauty.
But the Luther Church is not just magnificent. It combines splendor and comfort like almost no other church. Its size and interior has nothing forbiddingly cold about it; on the contrary, it is cozy. And so when I pass this square, I not only shift my bike down a gear, but also switch off, breathe a sigh of relief and take pleasure in Wiesbaden's architectural heritage.
