"What does love mean today?" - Workshop with Elke Schmitter

On Tuesday, June 3 at 3 p.m., author Elke Schmitter will give a workshop in the Other Salon of the Literaturhaus entitled "What does love mean today? - Personal and impersonal explorations". The workshop lasts until around 5.30 pm.

Love is a feeling - and therefore also a narrative. A literature whose author we are. A story in which an ego plays the leading role, which speaks of itself and of a you who is adored or missed, to whom the ego is attracted and wants to be desired. And yet falling in love often feels like fate, like something that happens to you - sometimes against your will. It seems like a story that you don't tell yourself.

Love is seen as something absolutely private; at the same time, it is also something that society "produces". By favouring certain feelings and ways of loving and making others taboo. By regulating how one courts, what is offensive and what is permitted. By making "love at first sight", "great love" and "unhappy love" the subject of conversations, novels, poems and films.

This workshop will focus on the paradoxes of love. We will talk, we will discuss, and we will also write something down.

Elke Schmitter, born in 1961, is the author of the novels "Frau Sartoris", "Vera's Daughter" and "Inneres Wetter", among others. Her most recent publication is "Alles, was ich über Liebe weiß, steht in diesem Buch" (2024).

The workshop is part of the event series "Re:Love - Rediscovering Love". The workshop is organized by the Literaturhaus Villa Clementine/Kulturamt Wiesbaden in cooperation with the Evangelical Deanery Wiesbaden.

Reading with Elke Schmitter from "Everything I know about love is in this book"

On Tuesday, June 3 at 7:30 p.m., author Elke Schmitter will be a guest at the Literaturhaus and will present her book "Alles, was ich über Liebe weiß, steht in diesem Buch" in conversation with Christoph Schröder (SZ and Die Zeit).

This book is a story about the happiness and agony of love: what do we know about the inner chemical factory, narcissism, ghosting and the mystery of spontaneous attraction? A polyphonic book about the most emotional subject there is - for all those who have experienced or are currently experiencing this state, but also for those who are unfamiliar with it or have forgotten it.

ELKE SCHMITTER was born in Krefeld in 1961. In addition to her work as a cultural journalist, she also writes poetry and prose.

The author's reading is part of the event series "Re:Love - Rediscovering Love". The reading is organized by the Literaturhaus Villa Clementine/Kulturamt Wiesbaden in cooperation with the Evangelical Deanery Wiesbaden.

The Surreal Worlds of Leonora Carrington - reading with music

The Staatstheater Wiesbaden is presenting the world premiere of an unpublished text by the great surrealist Leonora Carrington: "Judith", a wild approach to the biblical figure with biographical elements. Judith actress Evelyn Faber and Felix Strüven will continue this visually powerful journey with a musical reading on Wednesday, June 11 at 7:30 pm at the Literaturhaus Villa Clementine. Excerpts from "Judith" and other texts will take you into Carrington's mystical world, which is characterized by vivid images and deep symbolism.

Accompanied by live music from solo oboist Manuel Garcia Simón of the Hessisches Staatsorchester, a combination of literature and sound unfolds, bringing Carrington's visionary worlds to life.
