Full fire in an ambulance on the B455
At around 11.30 a.m. today, an ambulance caught fire on the B455 in the direction of Mainz-Kastel. The vehicle caught fire near the A66, presumably due to a technical defect. The crew of the ambulance, which was not carrying a patient, was able to park the vehicle on the side of the road, leave it and make an emergency call; both crew members were uninjured.
Forces from the professional fire department and the Erbenheim and Bierstadt volunteer fire departments were immediately alerted to fight the fire. A column of smoke visible from afar showed the firefighters the way as they approached. The fire department was able to quickly bring the fire under control using two water jets, with a water tender that had also been alerted being used in a shuttle service to secure the water supply.
During the extinguishing work, the affected lane had to be fully closed by the police, which is why traffic could be obstructed. The ambulance involved was a total loss as a result of the fire. (jh)
