Serious apartment fire in Wiesbaden claims lives

On 06.01.2025 at 04:00, the Wiesbaden fire department was alerted to a fire in an apartment in an old four-storey building in Mainstraße in Wiesbaden-Biebrich. When the first firefighters arrived, they noticed heavy smoke and the smell of burning coming from a window on the third floor.

A total of four teams wearing breathing apparatus were deployed with two nozzles to fight the fire and rescue people. While 25 residents were able to leave the building on their own, one person had to be rescued from the affected apartment. Despite immediate resuscitation measures, the emergency doctor was only able to determine that the person had died. Another person was slightly injured and treated by the emergency services for smoke inhalation. A cat was also rescued and temporarily placed in an animal shelter. The fire was quickly extinguished, but the post-extinguishing work proved to be extremely difficult due to the many old wooden panellings. Numerous pockets of embers had to be laboriously uncovered and extinguished. One apartment was completely destroyed by the fire and another is uninhabitable. Property damage is estimated at around 150,000 euros. In addition to the fire department from fire stations 1 and 2, four ambulances, an emergency doctor, the head of the rescue service and the Schierstein and Biebrich volunteer fire departments were deployed. The criminal investigation department has begun investigating the cause of the fire. A fire expert is being called in to clarify the exact cause of the fire. The Wiesbaden fire department is appealing to all citizens to install smoke alarms in their homes and to check them regularly. Smoke alarms can save lives by giving early warning of a fire.
