Digital passenger information with barrier-free on-demand announcement at the main station
ESWE Verkehr has put a comprehensive, digital passenger information system into operation at Wiesbaden Central Station, which offers new possibilities both visually and acoustically. In addition to modern digital display panels, a color-coded guidance structure and a haptic-acoustic demand announcement provide significantly more clarity and accessibility - especially for people with impaired vision.
The new system replaces 20-year-old displays and provides real-time information on the departures of all bus routes departing from the four city bus platforms (A to D) and the regional bus station. Displays with the latest LED technology, strategically placed in the station building, show the departure positions in a clearly structured manner. The display follows a new color concept: each stop is now marked not only with a letter, but also with a color. This color coding system is also shown on the digital boards and enables quick, intuitive orientation. In addition, all four stops already have maps of the surrounding area showing the colors.
Acoustic announcement of requirements for people with impaired vision: Special attention was paid to accessibility. In close cooperation with the Inclusion and Accessibility Working Group, an acoustic request announcement for visually impaired people - only available in this form in Wiesbaden - was developed and installed. The surface of this innovative console depicts the surroundings of Wiesbaden Central Station and is designed in such a way that it can be explored visually as well as haptically and acoustically via electronic push buttons.
This gives visually impaired passengers the opportunity to get an overview of the various departure points for city and regional buses in a self-determined and unhurried manner. Thanks to the intuitive design, users can quickly and easily identify their desired route and find their way around. When the buttons are pressed, the route, departure direction and departure time are announced acoustically.
Wiesbaden's Head of Transport Andreas Kowol welcomes the new measures:
"ESWE Verkehr and the city of Wiesbaden are hereby committed to a modern, inclusive and user-friendly transport infrastructure. We are proud to be making a contribution to improving mobility for all people who use public transport in Wiesbaden."
Marion Hebding, Managing Director of ESWE Verkehr, adds: "The main railway station is one of the central mobility hubs in our city. This makes it all the more important that everyone - regardless of their individual needs - can find their way around quickly and safely. With this measure, we are setting another milestone on the way to barrier-free and digital public transport."
Barbara Knobloch, representative of the Inclusion and Accessibility Working Group, also praises the collaboration: "We are delighted to have been involved in the planning right from the start. The combination of digital information, clear color structure, haptic guidance system and acoustic announcements is unique in Germany for blind, visually impaired and mobile people and is therefore a successful example of accessibility in public spaces. A big compliment to ESWE-Verkehr."
The project manager at ESWE Verkehr, Florian Feuerstein, expressed his satisfaction with the close and constructive cooperation of all those involved in the implementation of the project. Special thanks also go to Deutsche Bahn, the owner of Wiesbaden Central Station, for its uncomplicated cooperation during planning and implementation.
The new information system is part of ESWE Verkehr's digitalization strategy and was partially funded by the state of Hesse. Future projects will also consistently focus on innovative technologies and comprehensive inclusion.
