Cemeteries: Gravestones are checked for stability
The annual stability check of gravestones in Wiesbaden's cemeteries will begin shortly. In order to ensure traffic safety in the cemeteries, all cemetery operators are obliged to check the stability of all standing gravestones once a year.
Even if a stonemason has properly erected and secured a gravestone, over the years it is possible for a gravestone to become loose due to weather conditions or other reasons. If someone then holds on to it or leans against it, the heavy weight of a gravestone can lead to dangerous situations. This is shown by around 100 accidents every year throughout Germany that are caused by loose gravestones.
To prevent such accidents from occurring, cemetery employees carry out so-called stability checks. Where in earlier times the gravestone was actually subjected to a "shake test" by hand, today technology is used. A specially developed and approved measuring device is used to build up a continuous pressure of 300 N (around 30 kilograms), which the stone has to withstand. If it does not move, everything is fine. However, if it does move and starts to sway, it is secured with a post and a sticker is attached to indicate the risk of an accident. In addition, a letter is sent to those entitled to use the gravesite asking them to have the monument professionally secured.
Even if the state capital of Wiesbaden inspects the gravestones annually as part of its traffic safety measures, the liability for the gravestones still lies with the respective authorized users. If, when visiting Wiesbaden cemeteries in the coming weeks, municipal employees are seen moving from gravestone to gravestone with a measuring device, this is a stability check.
