Kick-off for climate fasting: start of the climate protection competition

The climate fast was officially launched on Ash Wednesday, March 5. Lord Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende, Mayor and Head of the Environment Department Christiane Hinninger and Protestant Dean Arami Neumann kicked off the seven-week fasting campaign, which focuses on climate protection and climate justice, at the Zukunftswerk in the Luisenforum.

Wiesbaden joins Mainz and Darmstadt in a playful climate protection competition. The campaign is initiated by the Protestant Church and supported by the participating cities as partners.

"Climate protection begins in everyday life - this is exactly where the climate fasting campaign comes in. Wiesbaden is taking on the neighboring cities of Mainz and Darmstadt in a playful competition - but when it comes to climate protection, we are all pulling together. Because the decisive factor is that everyone can take part and make a contribution through conscious decisions. Lent offers an ideal opportunity to question routines and develop sustainable habits," says Lord Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende.

Mayor Christiane Hinninger welcomes the campaign: "Consciously dealing with waste, paying attention to seasonal nutrition or saving electricity - all small things that have a big impact if enough people take part. The challenge can help people have fun making the world a little bit better."

"Christians, but also people of other religions, fast, i.e. do without, in order to focus on the essentials and question habits. With climate fasting, especially with the climate protection app, we have the opportunity to playfully encourage a more economical use of resources. We are delighted that we have succeeded in organizing climate fasting as a competition this year with Wiesbaden, Mainz and Darmstadt," said Dean Arami Neumann at the launch event.

The competition is organized via the climate protection app H.O.P.E. Participants choose their city and collect points by implementing sustainable actions in their everyday lives - for example by collecting garbage, saving water or energy, conscious consumption, climate-friendly mobility or sustainable nutrition.

At the end of Lent, the city with the most points collected wins. There is also an individual ranking of users. Prizes include an exclusive ascent of the Marktkirche tower with the opportunity to see the famous carillon up close.
