WMK: Drosihn prizewinners' concert honors young musical talent

During a concert at the Kulturforum on Tuesday, May 6, the Lions Club Wiesbaden-Mattiacum awarded the Drosihn Prize to five up-and-coming musicians. The honorees had previously participated successfully in the state competition "Jugend musiziert".

The concert offered the audience a varied program in which the prizewinners presented their musical skills.

Ludwig Walter, who has been taking double bass lessons since the age of nine, opened the concert with three movements for double bass and piano by Domenico Dragonetti. The movement from Sergei Koussevitzky's Concerto in F sharp minor op. 3 showed how melodious a double bass can sound. Walter has not only played with the Hochtaunus Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Wetterau Youth Symphony Orchestra, but also passed the audition for the Hesse State Youth Symphony Orchestra (LJSO) in 2024.

Carolina Schaaf continued the program, delighting the audience with her versatile voice. The 13-year-old captivated the audience with her interpretations of "Rolling in the Deep" (Adele), "I have nothing" (Whitney Houston) and "Skyfall" (Adele). Schaaf, who has only been taking singing lessons since 2023, earned enthusiastic applause and impressed not only the evening's visitors, but also the jury at the state competition Jugend musiziert. In June, she will demonstrate her skills at the national competition in Wuppertal.

The two harpists Helena and Penelope Tscherbner opened the second part of the concert. They began with an arrangement of the canon in D major by Johann Pachelbel, in which they demonstrated how well they harmonize as a duet. The two sisters also performed Fugue and Variation op. 18 by César Franck confidently and with great feeling, followed by the unusual piece "September Child" by Jana Kmitova. The sisters each began learning to play the harp at the age of four. They are taking part in the Jugend musiziert competition for the third time this year, but for the first time as a harp duo, and are now also delighted to have been invited to the national competition in Wuppertal.

Caspar Maiwald, multiple successful prizewinner of various competitions and two-time Drosihn prizewinner, concluded the concert evening. Maiwald, who is a permanent member of the first violin section of the Hesse State Youth Symphony Orchestra and was forwarded to the national Jugend musiziert competition with the highest score, thrilled the audience with his performance. He interpreted a movement from the Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major KV 219 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with confidence and sensitivity and also impressed the audience with a movement from the Partita No. 2 in D minor BWV 1003 for solo violin. The Allegro non troppo from the Violin Concerto No. 3 by Camille Saint-Saëns allowed Maiwald to shine once again in all facets of violin playing.
