Public participation on the future of the cemeteries starts in May

In order to ensure the sustainable and future-proof development of the city's cemeteries, the Parks Department is currently drawing up a cemetery development plan (FEP). Citizens can now contribute their opinions on the FEP.

"We want to ensure that our cemeteries retain their function as places of peace and remembrance in the future and can contribute to biodiversity and climate adaptation as green retreats in our city," says Mayor and Head of Green Spaces Christiane Hinninger.

The background to the planning is a profound change in burial culture: increasing individualization and the growing number of alternative forms of burial mean that many burial areas in cemeteries are no longer being used. At the same time, the care and maintenance of the cemeteries must continue to be guaranteed - with increasingly scarce financial resources, as the fee income no longer covers the costs incurred.

The FEP aims to secure the use and maintenance of cemetery areas in the long term and develop them sustainably in order to ensure their growing importance as part of the green infrastructure with regard to the urban climate, biodiversity and quality of life in the city districts.

Interested parties can now contribute their opinions via an online survey: It can be accessed at wiesbadenwirkt.de/en/fep (opens in a new tab). In addition, a survey tool will be available at the South Cemetery, the North Cemetery, the cemeteries in Dotzheim, Biebrich and Kostheim as well as at the local citizens' office until the end of June. The results will be incorporated into the cemetery development plan, which is scheduled for completion in fall 2026.
