Press release of the state capital Wiesbaden

Urban development day in Biebrich: Have your say, get involved, help shape the future

On Friday, April 24, from 3 to 6 p.m., the state capital of Wiesbaden is hosting an Urban Development Day at the Robert-Krekel-Anlage in Biebrich. Citizens can find out about the development of Biebrich-Mitte, get to know what is on offer in the district and contribute ideas for the planned redesign of the green space. In case of bad weather, the event will take place in the Galatea-Anlage citizens' hall.

The event is part of the nationwide Urban Development Day, which is officially celebrated on May 9. On this day, cities and municipalities open their projects to the public. Residents gain insights into initiatives aimed at further developing neighborhoods and making them more livable.

In Biebrich, visitors can look forward to a program featuring hands-on activities for children and adults, information booths run by local initiatives, and discussions with stakeholders from the neighborhood. Refreshments will be available at the summer bar.

A key focus of the event is the planned redesign of the Robert-Krekel-Anlage. The green space in the heart of Biebrich is to be redesigned as part of the urban development program under the leadership of the Parks and Recreation Department. The goal is to improve the quality of the space, strengthen it as a meeting place for all generations, and at the same time give greater consideration to aspects of climate adaptation and biodiversity.

On site, residents can offer suggestions for the future design, such as regarding the park’s amenities, seating and recreational opportunities, or activities for different age groups. The suggestions will be incorporated into the draft plan, which will be submitted to the relevant committees for approval starting this fall. The mobile information booth of the city’s Commissioner for Civic Engagement will also provide information on ways to get involved in Wiesbaden.

Urban development funding is a joint funding instrument of the federal and state governments. With financial aid from the federal government, funds from the states, and municipal resources, measures are supported that strengthen city centers and town centers, create sustainable urban structures, and address local social challenges. In Hesse, the programs are generally designed to last about ten years. The goal is to improve citizens’ living, housing, and working conditions and to strengthen their participation in shaping their living environment.

The “Vibrant Centers,” “Social Cohesion,” and “Growth and Sustainable Renewal” programs each have different priorities. The currently active funding areas in Wiesbaden include: “Vibrant Centers Wiesbaden Downtown-West,” “Social Cohesion Wiesbaden Biebrich-Mitte,” “Growth and Sustainable Renewal Wiesbaden Downtown and South (Stadtgrün Wiesbaden),” and “Growth and Sustainable Renewal Wiesbaden Kastel-West.”

The event in Biebrich is being organized in cooperation with the neighborhood management team of the Internationaler Bund Südwest gGmbH, the Parks and Recreation Department (Planning), the Commissioner for Civic Engagement (Office of the Mayor, mitWIrken Unit), and the Office of Social Work (Housing Department – Urban Development Funding). Questions can be directed to the Housing Department at the Office for Social Work at wohnenwiesbadende.
