Composers' Quarter to Get a New Neighborhood Square
With a newly designed plaza at the intersection of Abeggstraße and Schumannstraße, the Komponistenviertel is gaining a new gathering place. It was funded largely by donations.
Mayor Christiane Hinninger says: “The fact that we were able to create this neighborhood plaza is largely thanks to the Hans + Irene Jade Foundation. With its generous donation of 171,000 euros, the foundation covered more than half of the total costs of approximately 270,000 euros. This commitment shows what can be achieved when the urban community, politicians, and city officials work together to further develop public spaces. On behalf of the state capital of Wiesbaden, I would like to express my sincere gratitude.”
The approximately 1,080-square-meter area has been extensively redesigned. About 350 square meters are available for relaxation and leisure activities. The square is accessible to people with disabilities and offers seating. A wooden sculpture designed specifically for the square invites visitors to climb, sit, and lie down. An area of about 70 square meters can be used for activities such as playing boules.
For the landscaping, 25 trees and shrubs were planted that are adapted to dry and hot conditions. In addition, there are climate-adapted perennial beds as well as a newly created wildflower meadow. A wind-resistant umbrella complements the selection of shaded seating areas.
The new neighborhood square does not yet have a name of its own. The local advisory board is responsible for this. Ideas for what the new gathering place could be called will be developed together with the neighborhood.
The neighborhood square is part of a long-term plan for a continuous green corridor in the Komponistenviertel. The first phase of this project was completed in September 2024 with the new playground at Hohenloheplatz.
