Wiesbaden is a leader in electric mobility. This is also ensured by the awarding of a concession for the expansion of the public charging infrastructure in the state capital. And now another milestone has been reached and duly celebrated: With 446 new charging points, ESWE Versorgung has surpassed the target of 420 and has thus already installed more than half of the planned new EV charging stations—all within two and a half years.

The fact is: Since 2023, the expansion in the Hessian state capital has nearly quadrupled. This is the highest growth rate among all independent cities and counties in Germany. With a current total of 1,256 charging points from various operators, Wiesbaden ranks ahead of major cities such as Braunschweig (1,169 public charging points), Bonn (1,143), and Duisburg (1,061). Mainz currently has 531 public charging points. 

“Decarbonizing the transportation sector is a key lever for achieving the local climate protection goals of the state capital of Wiesbaden and for sustainably improving air quality in the city,” explains Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende. “And expanding the charging infrastructure on public streets ensures that e-mobility becomes accessible to all citizens—especially those who live in rental apartments and do not have their own garage where they can install a wallbox.”

To make this possible, Wiesbaden decided in 2023 to award an expansion concession. This calls for the installation of 800 new charging points by 2030.

“The ten-year concession agreement ensures a reliable and clearly phased expansion plan,” says Andreas Kowol, Head of the Department of Construction and Transportation. “The locations were determined in advance through a broad dialogue process with the local advisory councils. This ensures that the charging points are installed exactly where the people of Wiesbaden actually need them. The current milestone of 420 charging points by summer 2026 shows that the agreed-upon phased plan is being followed precisely.”

“As a local energy service provider, ESWE is actively shaping the quality of life and the energy transition in the region—and we are also the reliable local infrastructure partner when it comes to expanding public charging points,” reports board member Dr. Oliver Malerius. “ESWE now operates over 2,200 charging points in Wiesbaden and the surrounding area, including just under 1,050 public charging points within the city limits of Wiesbaden. Demand and the strain on the power grid are rising rapidly: In 2025, we at ESWE recorded 238,000 charging sessions and 4.7 gigawatt-hours of electricity charged. That’s enough to circle the Earth 591 times in a fully electric vehicle. In total, this resulted in a reduction of 3,830 metric tons of CO2 compared to the use of internal combustion engines.”

Wiesbaden’s public charging infrastructure is a successful example of how the city, energy providers, and partners are working together to successfully shape the mobility transition. “Since we received the concession, we have already installed 202 charging stations with 446 new charging points at 151 locations,” explains Jan Lenzen. As Head of Electric Mobility at ESWE Versorgung, he is responsible for the expansion. And he also promises further reliable charging options for residents in the future.

The next milestone for the expansion concession is December 31, 2028: By then, ESWE Versorgung must have built a total of 610 charging points.
