Prolonged Heat Wave: Emergency Services on High Alert

A heat warning has been in effect in Wiesbaden for the past ten days. The fire department, emergency medical services, and disaster response teams have adjusted their operational readiness and are preparing for an increased volume of calls. The public is asked to take the warnings seriously, exercise caution, and keep an eye on those who are particularly at risk.

The German Weather Service continues to warn of persistent extreme heat in Wiesbaden. The lack of nighttime cooling is particularly critical. The Wiesbaden Fire Department is continuously monitoring the weather situation. A command center has been established to coordinate emergency response efforts; it is continuously assessing the current situation and initiating necessary measures.

The fire department, emergency medical services, and disaster response teams have prepared for these exceptional weather conditions to ensure that medical and technical emergency response capabilities remain in place. Among other measures, additional emergency medical personnel have been deployed. In addition, two additional ambulances are on duty. Furthermore, off-duty and volunteer personnel are voluntarily supporting emergency operations and helping to maintain operational readiness even under these exceptional conditions. Civil defense units are also on high alert. They are ready for action and can be called upon at any time to support the fire department and emergency medical services should the situation worsen further or the volume of calls increase.

Due to the ongoing heat wave and the resulting high workload for non-police emergency response services, the fire department and emergency medical services are expressly asking the public to exercise caution. By protecting yourself and looking out for others, you help prevent heat-related emergencies and ensure that emergency responders remain available for life-threatening emergencies.

The fire department therefore recommends in particular:

  • drink plenty of water regularly,
  • to avoid physical exertion whenever possible or to schedule it for the cooler morning and evening hours,
  • to avoid direct sunlight during midday,
  • to pay special attention to vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, pregnant women, and people with pre-existing health conditions,
  • not to leave animals in parked vehicles,
  • use the cool places and refill stations designated by the City of Wiesbaden, and follow the guidelines in the Heat Action Plan.

The designated cool places and refill stations are available at www.wiesbaden.de/leben-in-wiesbaden/umwelt-natur-klima/klimaschutz/kuehleorte (opens in a new tab).
