Europe Day on May 9: Wiesbaden commits to a strong and united Europe

On the occasion of Europe Day on May 9, Maral Koohestanian, Head of the European Affairs Department, recalls the birth of European unification and reaffirms the city's commitment to a peaceful, united and democratic Europe.

Europe Day traces its origins to the 1950 Schuman Declaration, which is considered the cornerstone of today’s European Union. “Europe Day reminds us that a strong Europe emerges where people get involved, take responsibility, and work together toward an open, democratic, and united future,” explains Koohestanian.

With an exhibition at the Zukunftswerk, the Department of European Affairs recently highlighted the Council of Europe’s work on human rights, thereby sending a strong message in support of democracy, human rights, and social cohesion.

Europe thrives on participation—in local communities, in the regions, and through the engagement of its citizens. The state capital of Wiesbaden has maintained close ties with its European sister cities for many years and actively promotes exchange, understanding, and joint projects.

The European Affairs Office invites all citizens to contribute their own ideas, questions, and suggestions regarding the future of Wiesbaden as a European city. Ideas for a diverse and vibrant European community in Wiesbaden can be sent via email to europa.prwiesbadende

The European Affairs Office will review the submissions and take up selected ideas and suggestions. As a small token of appreciation, the individuals who submitted the ideas that are adopted will receive a European gift.
