AWO Wiesbaden takes over educational counseling in Schelmengraben
The sponsorship of the educational counseling center in Schelmengraben has been rearranged. The services for which Diakonie Wiesbaden is responsible until the end of 2025 will be taken over by Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO), Wiesbaden district association, in the course of May. The transfer is being carried out on behalf of and in close coordination with the state capital of Wiesbaden.
The goal of this reorganization is to ensure that high-quality parenting counseling services for Wiesbaden families are maintained in the long term, continued reliably, and further developed to meet current needs.
Parenting counseling is an indispensable component of municipal services. It is aimed at parents, children, adolescents, and young adults who need support with parenting issues, family conflicts, developmental and behavioral concerns, separation and divorce situations, or academic and psychosocial challenges. Counseling is provided free of charge, confidentially, and with low barriers to access.
With the AWO as the new operator, an important pillar of Wiesbaden’s municipal youth welfare landscape is secured. “This is particularly significant in light of changing social conditions, increasing psychological stress among young people, and a rising demand for counseling services,” emphasizes Dr. Patricia Becher, the responsible Social Affairs Commissioner.
A key concern in the context of the transfer of responsibility was ensuring continuity in staffing and expertise. This preserves both the high level of professional expertise and the established relationships of trust with families and cooperation partners. The established location of the educational counseling center in the Schelmengraben neighborhood will also remain. In addition, another location will be established in the Westend district to further strengthen local access to services.
“AWO Wiesbaden is taking over the existing services in their entirety while simultaneously providing targeted impetus for development. Planned priorities include expanding preventive services, strengthening low-threshold access, intensifying cooperation with educational institutions, and promoting intercultural counseling services,” says Bastian Hans, Executive Director of AWO Wiesbaden.
The city and AWO view the takeover as an important step toward securing the long-term future and further improving the quality of parenting counseling in Wiesbaden. “For families, children, and young people, this means above all reliability: counseling will continue to be available free of charge, confidentially, and without complications,” Dr. Becher concludes.
