Justus-von-Liebig-Schule: Magistrate gives green light for expansion of elementary school

The magistrate of the state capital of Wiesbaden has approved the implementation template for the structural extension of the Justus-von-Liebig School in Erbenheim.

The project will permanently expand the elementary school to six classes to meet the growing demand in the neighborhood. The proposal must now be approved by the Finance Committee before being finalized by the City Council.

The Justus-von-Liebig School currently has five classes per grade. Due to increasing residential development in the neighborhood—particularly in the Erbenheim-Süd development area—student numbers are rising steadily. To ensure adequate capacity, additional classrooms, specialized learning spaces, and after-school care rooms are needed.

“The Justus-von-Liebig School is growing along with its neighborhood. With this addition, we are not only creating the spaces our children need—we are investing in a modern, sustainable, and future-proof school for Erbenheim that is planned for the long term and is economically responsible,” said Dr. Hendrik Schmehl, Head of the School Department.

Several options were examined as part of a feasibility study. In close consultation with the school administration, the decision was made to build a permanent two-story addition. Compared to the modular construction originally considered, this offers decisive advantages: better functional and technical integration with the existing building, as well as long-term reliability of use and cost-effectiveness.
The new building will feature two classrooms, a specialized learning room, a supervision room, and restrooms on each of its two floors.

In parallel with the addition, the cafeteria is also being expanded: by utilizing the third food service counter, adding seating alcoves, and removing a glass partition wall, space and capacity are created to accommodate the increased demand for meals. Within the existing building, restructuring will create additional space for all-day operations.

A hybrid construction method combining cast-in-place concrete and wood panel construction contributes to greater sustainability and cost efficiency. Additionally, an expansion of the existing photovoltaic system on the existing roofs is planned.

The total cost amounts to approximately 5.6 million euros. Completion is scheduled for the end of 2027.
