Safety on construction sites: Respect barriers
To prevent serious accidents, the state capital of Wiesbaden is calling on people to strictly observe roadworks barriers. The appeal is prompted by dangerous incidents at the Emser Straße construction site.
Sewer lines are currently being replaced on Emser Straße. The work is visibly progressing and represents an important contribution to the renewal of the city’s infrastructure. At the same time, however, dangerous situations continue to arise. People are ignoring barriers and entering the construction site without authorization.
It is particularly risky when barriers are opened or bypassed without authorization. Despite clear signs and barriers, pedestrians, cyclists, e-scooter riders, and children use the construction site as a shortcut. In doing so, they often move into the working area of excavators and other heavy equipment—that is, where the machines are moving or swinging. The City of Wiesbaden, the waste management company (ELW), and the construction firm therefore issue a joint warning: Unauthorized persons face a high risk of serious accidents—for example, due to limited visibility in the blind spots of construction vehicles or due to the confined workspace.
The construction process also suffers from this misconduct: To minimize risks, work must be repeatedly interrupted or slowed down. This delays progress and places a burden on the companies involved. On-site employees are exposed to additional stress, as they work under increased pressure and bear responsibility for accidents in the event of an emergency.
“Construction sites are not thoroughfares,” the city emphasizes. “Barriers are there to protect everyone. Those who respect them help ensure that the work can be completed quickly and safely. No one—neither the construction company’s employees, nor city administration staff, nor residents—wants a serious accident to occur.” The city therefore urges all citizens to observe barriers and not to enter or drive through construction sites. Parents are asked to make their children aware of this as well.
