Redesign of Kochbrunnenplatz: Public Participation Begins

The historic Kochbrunnenplatz in downtown Wiesbaden—located between Saalgasse, Taunusstraße, Georg-August-Zinn-Straße, and the passageway to Kranzplatz—is undergoing a comprehensive redesign. The state capital of Wiesbaden is currently developing a plan for the project and invites the public to get involved from the very beginning.

Mayor and Head of the Environment Department Christiane Hinninger says: “We want to transform Kochbrunnenplatz so that the people of Wiesbaden will enjoy spending time there even on hot summer days. After all, only by adapting to climate change can Kochbrunnenplatz remain a place where people come together. Of course, we’ll take into account its historical significance as Wiesbaden’s most famous spring site. We invite all residents to participate in the redesign to make the downtown area an even better place to live.”

From Friday, November 6, through Sunday, November 22, residents can learn about the project online at www.wiesbadenwirkt.de/kochbrunnenplatz (opens in a new tab) and get directly involved. On Tuesday, December 1, and Wednesday, December 2, an “ideas workshop” will take place on-site each day, during which the planners will be available for discussions. Those interested can then ask about the details and background of the redesign, participate in workshops, and contribute their own ideas and wishes for a greener and more vibrant square.

The square surrounding the drinking fountain and the thermal spring serves as an important recreational space for residents of the densely built-up Bergkirchen neighborhood and the city center. At the same time, it plays a significant role in tourism, hosts urban celebrations such as the Kranzplatzfest, and serves as a prominent location in front of the State Chancellery.

To ensure the square remains attractive, the redesign will address climate-related challenges such as overheating and heavy rainfall, making the square more climate-resilient overall: the goals include more greenery, more shade, more unpaved areas, and improved rainwater management. Even after the redesign, all existing events and uses will still be possible. There will continue to be a playground and a public restroom.

Details regarding the process, exact times and locations, as well as opportunities for public participation, are now available on the central participation platform at the aforementioned website address.
