City Welcomes Federal Cartel Office's Decision on Tegut Stores

The state capital of Wiesbaden welcomes the decision by the Federal Cartel Office allowing Edeka to acquire 178 Tegut grocery stores, including six in Wiesbaden.

“The Federal Cartel Office’s decision opens up the possibility that the Tegut stores in Wiesbaden will be taken over and their locations preserved. We’re pleased about that. The more local shopping options there are, the greater the selection of groceries, the better the local supply, and the stronger the competition. Furthermore, every store creates jobs. We therefore hope that all affected stores in Wiesbaden will indeed remain open in the long term,” say Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende and Head of the Economic Affairs Department Daniela Georgi.

The company behind Tegut, the Migros Zurich Cooperative (GMZ), had decided in March 2026 to withdraw from the German market. As part of this realignment, GMZ signed an agreement with Edeka to take over a large portion of the Tegut Group. According to a press release, the Federal Cartel Office has now approved this plan under certain conditions. Edeka is thus permitted, among other things, to take over the Wiesbaden Tegut stores at 82 Dotzheimer Straße in the Rheingauviertel, 26 Fondetter Straße in Naurod, 17 Frankfurter Straße in the Southeast, 23 Luisenstraße in Mitte, Rheingaustraße 30 in Schierstein, and Richard-Wagner-Straße 86 in the Northeast.

The Federal Cartel Office examines mergers in the food retail sector from two perspectives: first, with regard to their impact on competition for customers, and second, with regard to their impact on manufacturers and suppliers.
