As a firefighter on emergency duty, you are right in the middle of a really exciting and responsible job. Rescue, extinguishing, recovery, protection - every day brings new challenges that require team spirit, courage and know-how!

After successfully completing your training, you will be taken on directly as a probationary civil servant.


Your tasks? Fighting fires, minimizing risks, protecting people.

  • You carry out firefighting and fire spread measures.
  • You carry out rescue, safety and recovery work and NBC operations.
  • You save lives and make danger zones safe.
  • You will initiate emergency medical care measures (paramedic).
  • You will operate and maintain fire-fighting and rescue equipment.
  • You will apply your technical expertise in our various workshops.

Practical training Technical training workshops/own companies, e.g. Weiterstadt Vocational and Technology Center, Wiesbaden Fire (opens in a new tab) and Rescue Service Academy
Theoretical training Werner-Heisenberg (opens in a new tab) vocational school in Rüsselheim and Hessian State Fire Service School (opens in a new tab) in Kassel (block teaching)

Part 2: fire department examination

Special features Acquisition of a class B/C/CE driving license and training as a paramedic at our rescue service school as well as in a hospital and at a rescue station

Must-haves

  • Good secondary school leaving certificate
  • Minimum age at the start of training: 16.5 years
  • Fulfillment of the requirements under civil service law
    • German nationality or that of an EU member state
    • Maximum age of 35 years at the time of appointment as a civil servant
    • Health suitability
  • unrestricted personal, physical and mental suitability for the fire department (e.g. unrestricted breathing apparatus suitability, suitability for a class CE driving license)
  • Successful participation in a selection procedure
  • German silver swimming badge (proof must be submitted by the selection procedure and must not be more than 1 year old)

  • Strong ability to work in a team with colleagues
  • High sense of responsibility
