The son of Ernst Gerhard Cornelius Pagenstecher began studying medicine in Heidelberg at the age of 16, obtained his doctorate in 1819 and passed the Nassau state examination in 1820. He was a medical assistant in Nassau/Lahn from 1821. In 1824 he moved to Elberfeld.
As a doctor, Pagenstecher was committed to the interests of the needy. As a politician, he was a member of the Committee of Fifty and was elected to the Frankfurt National Assembly. His son, Heinrich Alexander Pagenstecher (1825-1889), was a well-known doctor and zoologist.
