sam - City museum on the market

Favorite piece April

Every month, visitors to the "sam - Stadtmuseum am Markt" choose their favorite item from the collections at a multimedia station. In April 2026, the choice fell on a pair of women's shoes.

Women's shoes

These silk shoes resemble ballet shoes but have a red heel. They certainly belong more to the category of so-called "Sunday shoes," which were worn on festive occasions.

Shoes primarily serve a protective function, but they have also evolved into a status symbol. Heeled shoes have been known since the 17th century.

Upon closer inspection, it becomes apparent that these shoes were made without distinguishing between the right and left foot, even though this distinction was already known.

A distinction between left and right was known to the Romans and Greeks and persisted into the Middle Ages, but was lost in the 17th century. It was not until the late 19th century that this distinction was revived.
