Christa Moering Scholarship 2016
The jury of the Christa Moering Scholarship awarded by the state capital of Wiesbaden has chosen artist Dirk Brömmel as the 2016 winner.
In honor of the painter and honorary citizen Christa Moering - 1916 to 2013 - the state capital of Wiesbaden awards a biennial scholarship to support artists. In 2016, an artist was awarded the scholarship for the sixth time, this time Dirk Brömmel.
The scholarship, endowed with 10,000 euros, was publicly advertised; artists living, working or born in Wiesbaden were eligible to apply. A total of 33 applications from all areas of the visual arts were received for this year's theme "Fascination of Space". The six-member jury agreed on the photographer Dirk Brömmel after a detailed review of all applications and intensive discussion.
The selection was not easy due to the high quality of the applications submitted from Wiesbaden, Germany and the USA. After an in-depth exchange of quite controversial arguments, the decision was unanimously made in favor of Dirk Brömmel. He is an artist who is recognized far beyond Wiesbaden and has been intensively involved with space in his photographic work for many years.
Born in Bonn in 1968, Dirk Brömmel first trained as a photographer and then went on to study at the University of Applied Sciences in Wiesbaden to become a graduate communications designer specializing in photography. He then went on to study fine art at the Academy of Fine Arts at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, also specializing in photography, which he completed with a diploma, distinction and academy certificate as a master student of Professor Vladimir Spacek.
His photographic views of barges and gondolas and his carefully composed images of the Villa Tugendhat have made him famous and won him prizes. Space and time are combined in the photographs, which transfer atmospheric elements from the past to the present and gain new relevance in the synopsis of the time and space levels. The jury was also impressed by the poetry and precision that characterize Dirk Brömmel's work.
In addition to Rose-Lore Scholz, Head of Cultural Affairs, the jury consisted of Simone Koch and Hendrik Schmehl from the Cultural Committee of the City Council, Beatrix Klein from the Women's Museum, Evelyn Bergner from the Wiesbaden Museum, Ingrid Roberts, Head of the Cultural Office, and Dr. Isolde Schmidt, Head of the Fine Arts Department. The scholarship is linked to an exhibition at the Kunsthaus, which will probably be on display at the end of 2017.
