Erbach Strawberry Festival
The big festival for the queen of fruit: the Erbach Strawberry Festival will be celebrated from Friday to Monday, June 13 to 16. It officially opens on Saturday afternoon at 5 pm with all the wine queens from the Rheingau.
The Erbach Strawberry Festival is a classic among the Rheingau wine festivals and has been attracting visitors from all over Germany to the Rheingau every year in mid-June for decades. The popular festival was founded around 80 years ago in honor of the "queen of fruits". Back in 1935, strawberry cultivation was widespread in the Rheingau and the Rheingau fruit market was also based in Erbach at that time. From here, the sweet red fruits were shipped all over Germany. Even some noble houses received their strawberries directly from Erbach. And the fact that wine and strawberries go so well together as a drink was highly appreciated, especially in the Rheingau. A reason for the people of Erbach to celebrate a strawberry festival with wine, strawberries and punch.
Four days of slicing
The delicious drink with fresh strawberries and the best Rheingau wine flows freely for visitors, as the hard-working "slicers" spend four days cutting kilos of strawberries into small pieces for the popular punch directly on site in a small room behind the Erbach town hall. It takes days for the hard-working "strawberry slicers" to get their hands clean again after the festival, as the color that the sweet red fruits leave behind when they are sliced is difficult to remove. Genuine German strawberries and Rheingau grape juices, freshly prepared by Erbach winegrowers, guarantee the outstanding quality of the punch.
Wine majesties open the festival
On Saturday afternoon, the official festival opening with all the wine queens from the Rheingau is traditionally held at 5 pm. The royal ceremony is accompanied by lots of music and dance performances by local clubs. Afterwards, the party continues well into the morning with dancing on the market square. Plenty of punch is provided until Monday evening and the numerous stalls around the market square invite you to enjoy culinary delights ranging from bratwurst to pizza and pasta to exotic delicacies. And, of course, the Erbach winegrowers will also be offering fine wines at their festival stands.
