Current economic and labor market barometer shows slight increase in unemployment
The general economic climate has developed slightly positively compared to the previous year: The price-adjusted gross domestic product (GDP) shows an increase of 0.3% in Q3 2025 compared to Q3 2024. Sentiment in the German economy has stabilized at a slightly positive level. The IFO business climate index stood at 87.7 points in September 2025, 2.5% higher than in September 2024. According to the Office for Statistics and Urban Research, the number of unemployed people has risen and remains at a significantly higher level than before the coronavirus crisis. A total of 13,247 people were registered as unemployed in Wiesbaden in September 2025. This was 306 more than in the same month last year, with a percentage increase of 2.4 percent. The unemployment rate is 8.1 percent. The number of unemployed also rose in the other major Rhine-Main cities, particularly in Frankfurt (+ 8.2 percent) and Darmstadt (+ 7.3 percent). Wiesbaden still has the second-highest unemployment rate among the Rhine-Main cities after Offenbach.
The most recent data on employment relates to March 31, 2025 and again shows a significant increase in employment. On this date, exactly 117,520 Wiesbaden residents were employed and subject to social insurance contributions, which is 935
(or 0.8 percent) more than at the same time last year. This positive trend can also be seen in the other major cities in the Rhine-Main region; for example, the number of employees subject to social security contributions in Darmstadt rose by 1.3% between March 2024 and March 2025.
