Ocotal (Nicaragua)

The town twinning between Wiesbaden and Ocotal was ratified on May 16, 1990 with the aim of improving the living conditions of the local people.

In 1985, the association Nueva Nicaragua e.V. proposed entering into a city partnership with the Nicaraguan city of Ocotal. In the same year, this partnership was approved by Wiesbaden City Hall. A partnership agreement was ratified in Wiesbaden in 1990. The declared aim is to improve the living conditions of the inhabitants of Ocotal in the long term.

Since the partnership agreement came into force, the state capital of Wiesbaden has supported its twin city with money and know-how for many social and humanitarian projects. Of particular note are the emergency aid following the destruction caused by hurricane "Mitch" in 1998 and a sewage project that was carried out in cooperation with Werkhof Darmstadt and with EU funding from 1995 to 2003.

Located in the north of Nicaragua, Ocotal is the capital of the province of Nueva Segovia. It is characterized by the nearby Dipilto Mountains.

The association Nueva Nicaragua e.V. has been supporting projects in Ocotal with donations for many years and accompanies young people on their voluntary service every year.

Many projects have been realized on the initiative of the association, such as the children's library "Las Abejitas", the children's circus "Ocolmena" and a Montessori kindergarten. It also supports the women's shelter "Casa Entre Nosotras", where women threatened by violence receive protection and psychosocial and spiritual care.

The association also passed on donations to other institutions such as the education center, Radio Segovia and the "San Antonio" retirement home. The hospital in Ocotal receives medical support in various areas from the Dr. Horst Schmidt Kliniken (HSK) in Wiesbaden. (opens in a new tab)
