Welcome to Medenbach
A lively village surrounded by a varied landscape of forest, farmland and orchards.
For its 2534 inhabitants (as of June 2024), Medenbach is attractive due to its varied landscapes, long village history and active and lively village life.
The varied landscape that surrounds Medenbach is bordered to the north by an old forest consisting mainly of beech and oak trees. This forest continues to the east as far as the "An den drei Weiden" industrial estate. It is interrupted by the A3 highway. To the south and west of the settlement area are extensive fields and meadows that are still used for agriculture today.
The Protestant village church is picturesquely situated in the old village center. It was consecrated in 1107 by Bishop Hartberg von Brandenburg and endowed with a farm (approx. 7.5 hectares) by Abbots Dietrich von Sankt Alban and Burchard von Sankt Jacob in Mainz. It was probably dedicated to St. Ursula. Protestant preaching began in 1531. The church, which was destroyed down to the surrounding walls during the Thirty Years' War, was rebuilt as early as 1670. Around 1714, it was raised, the bell-shaped dome was erected and the pulpit, confessional/parish chair and galleries were installed in Baroque style. After extensive renovation work on the building and exterior in the first decade of this century, the village's old landmark is well worth a visit.
The icon of "St. Nicholas of Medenbach" was found in the Medenbach district in 2007. It is a 200-year-old traveling icon of St. Nicholas made of cast bronze with traces of gilding.
In 1814, Cossacks who died of typhus or typhoid fever were quartered in Medenbach and buried with their icon on the churchyard wall. After the Battle of Leipzig, they had helped the Prussian troops to push Napoleon back further and further to the other side of the Rhine.
The Medenbach highway church, located on the A3 near Wiesbaden, at the Medenbach West service station, is the first highway church in Hesse (direction Frankfurt). It was inaugurated on March 30, 2001 and was built thanks to a foundation. The significant building is intended to arouse curiosity. The interior offers an atmosphere conducive to contemplation - in contrast to the hectic and restlessness of the highway. The highway church is open day and night all year round. A service is held at least once a month. On various occasions, visitors can continue their journey strengthened by an "ecumenical travel blessing". A prayer book is displayed in a special place in the church. It is now the 42nd book. Each book contains 1000 pages.
Walkers can easily find their way to the orchard at the end of Medenbach, on the right-hand side of Wildsachsener Straße (towards the highway police station). The orchard, part of the "Nassauer Land" orchard route, consists of 263 different high-stem trees with 156 old apple varieties, 19 pear trees and 8 others on 2.5 hectares. The trees planted before 2000 and 2008 to 2024 are or will be labeled and are reminiscent of the former district with fruit trees "as far as the eye can see". Today, the orchards are valuable biotopes and genetic reservoirs for many plants and animals.
In the old village center, two "Hofreiten", which were built around 1700 and restored in the 1980s, can be viewed. The village community center, built in the 1950s and of great importance for the development of the former farming village, has been privatized and today shows little of its former appearance.
In the former old village school (until 1964) at Neufeldstraße 9, the Medenbach Local History Association (Heimat- und Geschichtsverein Medenbach 1993 e.V.) has set up the local history museum on the upper floor and in the attic. The extension work, which was completed at the beginning of 2020, includes the construction of a historic inn, as there were several in Medenbach in the first half of the last century. The "old village smithy" and a wainwright's workshop can be visited on the same site.
The route of the new ICE Frankfurt-Cologne line (opened in 2001), which passes Medenbach in the west through the Schulwald tunnel, has prevented the landscape from being cut up and further noise pollution from occurring.
The "noise protection system" mentioned in the 1971 integration agreement was realized between 2002 and 2003 as a 1500-metre-long and 4-metre-high noise protection wall on the west side of the A3.
The Wiesbaden police motorway station, located on the slip road to the Medenbach West freeway service area, was occupied in 2004. It is responsible for more than 100 kilometers of the A3, A66, A671 and A643 freeways, with the following tasks: Traffic monitoring, accident recording, combating crime, motorcyclists.
The new Medenbach community center was completed in 2018 and houses the local administration, the volunteer fire department and the local court as well as a citizens' hall.
