Mainz-Wiesbaden environmental zone

Wiesbaden and Mainz introduced a joint low emission zone in 2013. This measure supported compliance with the Europe-wide limit values for air pollutants. As a result, health hazards caused by motorized road traffic have been reduced.

Vehicles with particularly high pollutant emissions are not allowed to enter the low emission zone. This significantly improves air quality, which helps to protect the environment and our health.

The low emission zone is also an important instrument for complying with the current EU limits for particulate matter and nitrogen oxides, which will be tightened in 2030.

The legal basis for the Wiesbaden part of the low emission zone is the first update of the clean air plan for the Rhine-Main conurbation, Wiesbaden sub-plan. This provides for the low emission zone for Wiesbaden. It came into force on February 1, 2013.

The low emission zone covers large parts of the Wiesbaden city area. These are listed in detail on the map with the area of application (see further information: Federal Environment Agency - Low Emission Zones in Germany). In Mainz, the area within the highway ring road is an environmental zone. The federal highways are generally exempt.

Driving without a fine particle sticker or a valid exemption permit is punishable by a fine.
