Broken but valuable - what to do with electrical and electronic waste?
Did you know that you can take your broken toaster with you on your next trip into town to dispose of it and thus protect the environment? Too many electrical and electronic appliances are still hoarded at home or disposed of with household waste. You can dispose of your old appliances here!
The nearest drop-off point is closer than you think!
Correct disposal is easier than often assumed. In addition to the recycling center or small collection point, retailers are also obliged to accept old appliances. Stores with a sales area for electrical and electronic appliances of at least 400 square meters are obliged to take them back. Small appliances with an edge length of no more than 25 cm can be handed in free of charge in normal household quantities. In this case, the take-back is not linked to the purchase of an electrical or electronic appliance. Large appliances with an edge length of more than 25 cm are taken back free of charge when a new appliance of the same type is sold.
Many grocery stores that regularly sell electrical appliances and have a total area of at least 800 square meters also offer a return option. The same conditions apply as described above. Next time you go shopping, simply ask whether your store meets these requirements.
Online retailers with a storage and shipping area of at least 400 square meters must also take back old electrical appliances. For large appliances such as fridges, televisions or washing machines, free collection must even be offered.
What do you need to consider before disposal?
Please remove all batteries and rechargeable batteries that can be removed from the device without damaging them.
If the device has a data memory, as is the case with smartphones, laptops or tablets, for example, you should back up the data externally and then delete it from the device.
Why is correct disposal important?
International E-Waste Day on October 14, 2025 focuses on the correct disposal of electrical and electronic waste. Electrical appliances contain valuable raw materials such as gold, aluminum and copper, the recovery of which benefits the climate. At the same time, many appliances also contain hazardous substances such as mercury or refrigerants, which can have a serious impact on the environment and health if disposed of incorrectly.
Tip: Before you dispose of your appliance, take a look at a repair café, for example the "Repair Café on Tour" at the Umweltladen Wiesbaden - perhaps it can still be repaired. You will find the current dates linked in the further information section.
