Rhine bank design in the Biebrich SüdOst development area
The elimination of urban development deficiencies in the area of the banks of the Rhine was a focus of action in the Biebrich SüdOst social cohesion project.
The elimination of urban planning deficiencies in the area along the banks of the Rhine was a key focus of the Social Cohesion Biebrich Southeast project.
The aim of the project is to create a continuous Rhine riverbank with high amenity value and to repurpose the former customs buildings for residential, cultural, and gastronomic use.
The relocation of the former customs area on the banks of the Rhine in 2005 provided an opportunity to create a continuous Rhine promenade in Biebrich. Together with local residents, ideas for the design of this previously inaccessible area were developed during four planning forums. The results of the planning process have been incorporated into the framework plan for the design of the Rhine riverbank and the utilization concepts for the customs buildings, and form the basis for further planning. The customs warehouse is currently back in municipal ownership. Various concepts for its reuse are currently being examined.
Until the projects in the customs area are implemented, temporary uses are being realized in the former customs office. It has already developed into a public and lively place for the people of the district and visitors.
