80 years since the end of the war: Intercultural concert with keynote speech in the town hall
To mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and Germany's liberation from National Socialism, the state capital of Wiesbaden and the Gesellschaft für Christlich-Jüdische Zusammenarbeit Wiesbaden e.V. invite all citizens to an intercultural concert with a keynote speech on Sunday, May 11, 5 p.m., in the Festsaal of the town hall, Schlossplatz 6.
Places are limited. Registration is therefore required by Thursday, May 8, at protokollwiesbadende.
Five musicians from Germany, China, Latvia, Ukraine and Romania - Gernot Süßmuth (violin), Xunyu Zhou (viola), Ramón Jaffé (violoncello), Danilo Semenyuk (violoncello) and Monica Gutman (piano) - will perform together for the first time on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the end of the war. The program includes works by Antonio Vivaldi, Johann Sebastian Bach, Danilo Semenyuk, Edward Elgar, Ernest Bloch, Béla Bartók and Dmitri Shostakovich - composers from different eras and regions whose music builds bridges between times and people.
The introductory lecture will be given by Dr. Katherine Lukat from the Wiesbaden City Archive and is entitled "You have the power to shape the future!". In her lecture, she will explore the question of how Wiesbaden succeeded in developing a democratic urban society after 1945. The focus is on the tensions between the returning survivors of the concentration camps and a society that was previously actively involved in the National Socialist system.
Lord Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende emphasizes: "Especially in times when basic democratic values are once again being called into question, remembering history and actively shaping an open, diverse urban society is of particular importance. We are sending out an important signal for this with this event."
The Protestant Chairman of the Gesellschaft für Christlich-Jüdische Zusammenarbeit Wiesbaden e.V., Lothar Breidenstein, added: "With their origins, their cultural backgrounds and their shared artistic expression, the musicians on this evening symbolize what our society needs today: lived diversity, mutual respect and the unifying potential of culture."
