Extreme Heat: City Provides Information on Heat Safety
The German Weather Service is currently issuing a warning about extreme heat in Wiesbaden. The state capital, Wiesbaden, is taking this opportunity to highlight its tips and information on how to stay healthy on hot days at www.wiesbaden.de.
As part of the heat action plan for the state capital of Wiesbaden, informational materials have been developed specifically for seniors, as well as for pregnant women, infants, and toddlers. There is also a flyer written in simple language and another flyer that provides information on proper hydration for children during hot weather. The flyers can be downloaded online and are available in print at some municipal facilities for free pickup. More information can be found at www.wiesbaden.de/leben-in-wiesbaden/umwelt-natur-klima/klimaschutz/hitzeschutz (opens in a new tab).
A map showing cool places—such as parks or public buildings—that people can visit during heat waves is available at www.wiesbaden.de/leben-in-wiesbaden/umwelt-natur-klima/klimaschutz/kuehleorte (opens in a new tab).
In the free online brochure “Hitzeknigge,” the Public Health Department provides general health advice, as well as information on water play areas for children, tips on storing medication, and guidance on administering first aid. Residents can find the brochure, as well as printable tips in the form of the “Summer Tips” infographic, at the following link: www.wiesbaden.de/leben-in-wiesbaden/gesundheit/gesundheitsinfos/hitzeschutz (opens in a new tab).
Prof. Dr. med. René-Maxime Gracien, Director of the Wiesbaden Public Health Department, explains: “Heat waves can pose a serious strain and danger to human health. If a heat wave is imminent, the German Weather Service issues official heat warnings for the current day and the following day. In the ‘Heat Trend’ section, interested individuals can view the heat wave’s progression over the next five days. Being well-prepared for upcoming heat events is especially important for vulnerable groups such as seniors, pregnant women, parents with infants and toddlers, and people who are ill or in need of assistance.”
The state capital of Wiesbaden recommends that citizens, as well as managers and staff at health and social service facilities, download the German Weather Service’s weather alert app or subscribe to the corresponding newsletter. This will allow them to stay informed in a timely manner about further extreme heat events.
