New Seating Steps Inaugurated on the Banks of the Rhine in Biebrich

On Friday, June 19, the new seating steps at the Rheinwiesen in Biebrich were officially inaugurated in the presence of project participants and representatives from politics and government.

“It is very gratifying that we were able to successfully carry out another enhancement of the Rhine riverfront in Wiesbaden, in collaboration with Regionalpark Ballungsraum RheinMain GmbH. This project fulfills a wish expressed by residents for additional seating with an unobstructed view of the Rhine,” emphasizes Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende.

The project was funded by Regionalpark Ballungsraum RheinMain GmbH. Managing Director Kjell Schmidt adds: “We are pleased that we have now been able to create a special gathering place in Biebrich along the Regionalpark Leinpfad route.”

The seating steps complement the existing amenities on the Rhine meadows. The goal was to create a pleasant environment that strengthens the direct connection to the water and brings visitors closer to the Rhine. To make the area accessible to as many people as possible, one of the seating steps was equipped with a barrier-free access path and a more spacious seating area. This allows for use even with strollers or walkers.

Due to its location in the immediate floodplain of the Rhine—which overflows its banks several times a year—a particularly sensitive approach to construction was required. The seating steps were therefore integrated as subtle cuts into the existing, reinforced riverbank. This integration is what makes the facility so appealing: visitors can directly experience the water level, the current, and the waves created by passing ships.

“We are particularly pleased that the seating steps represent another measure from the Rhein.Main.Ufer concept that has been successfully implemented,” emphasizes Camillo Huber-Braun, head of the City Planning Office. “The concept comprises a total of 126 measures aimed at continuously improving the quality of the visitor experience along the Rhine riverbank in Wiesbaden.”

To sustainably rejuvenate the aging tree population on the Rhine meadows, two new trees were also planted as part of the project. These will provide additional shade for visitors in the future. The tree plantings were funded by the “Natural Climate Protection in Municipalities” grant program of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety, as well as by KfW.

“The new seating steps, along with the connecting bike path between Schierstein and Biebrich and the new recreational area under the Schierstein Bridge, are creating real added value and a great local recreation spot,” says Andreas Kowol, Head of the Department of Construction and Transportation.
