Wiesbaden honors the commitment of LGBT*IQ groups at the rainbow reception in the town hall
Lord Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende and Mayor Christiane Hinninger have honored the commitment of Wiesbaden residents to the acceptance of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, trans*, intersex and queer people (LGBT*IQ).
Guests from the LGBT*IQ community, local government, and civil society were invited to the traditional Rainbow Reception at City Hall on Friday, May 22. Every year, the event serves as a prelude to Christopher Street Day the following week.
Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende: “We need people who get involved, who take a stand, and who view a diverse society as a treasure worth preserving. The more of us who live out this conviction publicly, the less chance we give to exclusion and hostility.”
As part of a survey conducted last year, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, intersex, and queer people in Wiesbaden were asked about their experiences with violence and discrimination, as well as their sense of safety in public spaces. The results show that the majority of LGBT*IQ people in Wiesbaden feel safe. At the same time, a large number of respondents reported negative experiences in public spaces. These include staring or derogatory comments, verbal abuse, and threats. In some cases, physical assaults even occurred.
Mayor Christiane Hinninger: “Even though anti-LGBTQ* crimes are rarely recorded in police reports, the fact remains: every instance of violence and discrimination against members of sexual and gender minorities is one too many. Unfortunately, very few victims turn to the police or counseling centers after such experiences. We want to change that. No one should have to face such experiences alone. Anyone who is insulted, threatened, or attacked must know that support is available and that incidents are taken seriously.”
Specifically, the city administration aims to intensify its cooperation with the West Hesse Police Headquarters. One example of this was the “Together. Safe. Queer.” consultation hour held last week at City Hall. Those seeking advice were able to speak with the LGBTIQ Coordination Office and the police’s LGBTIQ liaison officers, ask questions, and learn more about specific support services.
On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Aidshilfe Wiesbaden e.V., founder and chairman Hans A. Kloos addressed those present at the Rainbow Reception. A musical performance by the queer choir “Die Uferlosen” concluded the official portion of the event.
The Rainbow Reception took place for the first time in 2019 and has since offered volunteers from associations and initiatives who are active year-round a special setting for networking and exchange.
