City Optimizes Traffic Management: Construction Projects on Mainzer Straße Will Be Better Coordinated
The Department of Transportation is working to optimize construction site planning and better coordinate various measures. A recent example of this is the revised plans for Mainzer Straße.
Construction sites are a natural part of a growing city. Roads, utility lines, and sewers must be replaced regularly. There are about 5,000 construction sites in Wiesbaden every year. The associated restrictions have a direct impact on traffic. The goal of construction site planning is to maintain traffic flow as effectively as possible despite necessary construction work and to avoid unnecessary additional disruptions. To this end, with the support of the Road Traffic Authority and the Civil Engineering and Surveying Office, much greater emphasis is now being placed—as early as the planning stage—on considering not only the individual construction projects but also their impact on the surrounding traffic network and possible alternate routes.
A current example is Mainzer Straße. The originally planned schedule has been further optimized. Construction work will be specifically scheduled during the fall break, and work will be concentrated on weekends and in the evenings whenever possible. At the same time, the necessary road closures will be better coordinated in terms of timing, and the detour plans will be adjusted accordingly. Rheinstraße also plays a role in this. Construction is taking place there as well, even though the street may be needed as a possible detour route for traffic coming from the Mainzer Straße area. By coordinating the measures accordingly, the goal is to prevent important detour options from being restricted at the same time.
“We know that construction sites cause traffic disruptions. This cannot be completely avoided. But we can work to minimize the impact as much as possible. That’s why we’re taking a closer look at when and where construction is taking place, which alternate routes are needed, and how we can better coordinate road closures,” says Marc Dahlen, Director of Transportation. This also involves managing the duration of the restrictions. Where possible, work will be consolidated or scheduled so that traffic disruption remains as minimal as possible. Weekends, school breaks, and evening hours will also be given greater consideration in the planning process. “Our goal is to keep traffic flowing as smoothly as possible—even in areas where construction is necessary. To achieve this, we’re optimizing our processes step by step. Not every traffic disruption can be prevented, but we want to do everything we can to ensure that a necessary construction site doesn’t create additional traffic congestion due to poor coordination,” says Dahlen.
During the fall break, Mainzer Straße between Gustav-Stresemann-Ring and Welfenstraße will be completely closed to outbound traffic from Monday, October 5, through Saturday, October 10. This is due to two construction projects taking place simultaneously by the Waste Management Services of the State Capital of Wiesbaden (ELW) and Eswe Versorgung.
Detour routes will be clearly marked for traffic. Coming from Kaiser-Friedrich-Ring, the detour runs via Kaiser-Friedrich-Ring, Am Landeshaus, Biebricher Allee, and Theodor-Heuss-Ring. From the direction of Gustav-Stresemann-Ring, traffic will be diverted via Gustav-Stresemann-Ring, Kaiser-Friedrich-Ring, and Biebricher Allee. It is recommended to avoid the closed area as much as possible. Cyclists and pedestrians can use their usual routes in this area.
Further along Mainzer Straße, restrictions will be in place at the intersection with Hohenstaufenstraße from Monday, October 5, through Friday, October 16. Due to the replacement of utility lines, traffic there will be restricted to a single lane with the roadway shifted in both directions. The partial closure also affects bicycle traffic. Pedestrians may use their usual routes.
The city asks for your understanding regarding the restrictions associated with this necessary work. An overview of selected construction sites is available at www.wiesbaden.de/baustellen (opens in a new tab). Information on possible bus detours is provided by Eswe Verkehr.
