Sparrow Node - Hyperlocal data collection on air quality, noise pollution and road conditions in Wiesbaden

The “Sparrow Nodes” are innovative, mobile, and multifunctional sensors mounted on municipal vehicles. Over a one-year period (January 2025 to May 2026), they will measure various parameters throughout the city. During their daily routes, these sensors collect a wide range of relevant environmental and infrastructure data, including air quality, noise levels, and road conditions. In conjunction with existing stationary monitoring stations, they enable high-resolution and comprehensive data collection—that is, measurements in areas where none could previously be taken.

This temporary data experiment aims to assess the added value of mobile sensor technology compared to stationary measurements. The findings from the data analysis will ultimately be evaluated in collaboration with experts from the Wiesbaden Environmental Agency and the Hessian State Office for Nature Conservation, Environment, and Geology (HLNUG). In addition, in collaboration with colleagues from the Public Health Department, the team is examining the extent to which the collected data can also be used and further analyzed in the context of public health research, for example regarding the potential effects of air quality and noise pollution on public health.

The advantages:

  • Detailed, small-scale data enables a differentiated analysis of the environmental pollution situation in the entire urban area
  • Early detection of road damage
  • More informed decision-making basis for administration and politics
  • More efficient air pollution control and noise protection measures
  • Strengthening smart urban development through innovative sensor technology

Who benefits from it?

  • Citizens who benefit from better air quality and less noise
  • City administration departments that require detailed environmental data for their planning and measures
  • Decision-makers in politics and urban development for the well-founded implementation of environmental and mobility strategies
