The designation of building areas, road construction, municipal fees, the construction of community centers, schools and kindergartens, land use and much more are among the municipal issues that city politicians deal with and which are discussed and decided in the municipal committees. With the exception of the full-time city councillors, the department heads, all municipal politicians work on a voluntary basis. They all put their professional and personal expertise at the service of the city. Only those who are resident in Wiesbaden can be elected to the city parliament as a city councillor. The same applies for election as a member of the local advisory council. The legal framework for this municipal self-administration is provided by the "Hessische Gemeindeordnung (HGO)".
